Breast hypertrophy is an overgrowth of breast tissue causing the breast to be overly large compared to the proportions of the rest of the body. Excessive breast volume is typically associated with breast sagging (breast ptosis is the medical term used to describe it) and sometimes a certain degree of asymmetry. Breast hypertrophy almost always causes neck, shoulder and back pain as well as difficulties when it comes to exercising and finding suitable clothes. This condition also has significant psychological repercussions.
Breast reduction objectives
The procedure aims at decreasing breast volume, correcting ptosis and asymmetry if necessary to achieve harmonious breasts. During surgery, the surgeon removes excess glandular tissue (from the overgrown mammary gland). A certain volume is preserved to meet the patient’s expectations. The breast tissue left is compacted and lifted up for a more youthful position and shape. The skin envelope has to be adapted (excess skin is removed) after the previous changes to ensure normal tension and tone. This part of the procedure results in different scars.

Breast reduction incisions
Depending on the extent of the corrections to be made, the whole incision pattern can include different incisions such as the vertical incision, the incision around the areolas and the horizontal incision along the inframammary fold. The length of the horizontal incision depends on the severity of breast hypertrophy and ptosis.
In certain cases, particularly when hypertrophy and ptosis are moderate, it is possible to only use the vertical incision to work on the breasts’ skin envelope. Breast reduction can be performed at the end of the patient’s growth and at any point in her life to significantly improve quality of life as well as the appearance of the breast.
