What is Botox ?
Botox is a medicine commonly used in traditional medicine for therapeutic purposes. Botox is also used aesthetic and anti-aging medicine because it is efficient on expression wrinkles when those are not too deep. Botox can be used alone or combined with fillers for a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation.
What does it do ?
Expression wrinkles result from facial muscle contraction over time : muscle contraction causes skin puckering since they are bonded, and repeated contractions over the years causes wrinkles.
Botox act on a muscular level, it blocks neuromuscular junctions, which has a paralyzing effect on the muscle causing the wrinkle. Injections are not made in the wrinkles like hyaluronic based fillers, but rather in the muscle to block movements. Blocking muscular contractions induces skin relaxation, allowing the wrinkle to be alleviated.
Which treatment areas are the most frequent ?
Common treatment areas include the upper face. Injections typically target the muscles responsible for frown lines, crows feet and forehead horizontal wrinkles.
Botox characteristics
Botox injections are not a permanent treatment. Botox duration of effect is approximately 6 months. Two injections per year can maintain results.
Given that a natural result is expected from this procedure, it is recommended to limit the number of treatments to 2 per year to avoid the dreaded ‘frozen face’. Botox can complement other facial rejuvenation treatments such as fillers injections. Botox can also be used as a preventive treatment against wrinkles before dermis fracture even occurs.
Botox is a safe and efficient treatment that guarantees short, medium and long term results.
