The lips are the fleshy part of the face constituting the anterior wall of the mouth in a lot of animals. There are two lips : the upper lip and the lower lip, they mark out the mouth. The lips are involved in pronunciation and feeding. In humans, their social function varies with each culture.
Appearance of the lips and facial beauty
The lips are also an important trait in facial beauty. When they are too thin, the face can look mean, or sad. On the other hand, plump lips convey the appearance of youth, sensuality and softness. The limit between sensual attractive lips and coarse lips is narrow. Obviously, the lower lip is always more fleshy than the upper lip and this difference has to remain after the lips are treated.
The mouth fits in the face and this type of difference has to be taken into account for the lip treatment’s result to be natural. Surgery (rhinoplasty, orthognathic surgery…) is sometimes a better option to improve the patient’s facial appearance. Natural aging, which causes bone resorption, also comes with thinning of the lips.
Lip augmentation with fillers
Hyaluronic acid based products, which are thin and fluid, are usually injected in the lips with a needle or a cannula to improve their shape. Different parts of the lips can be treated in order to offer the desired shape and volume. The necessary amount of hyaluronic acid varies according to the desired result. In most cases, the injections are distributed between the upper lip (2/3) and the lower lip (1/3).
Fillers have a duration of 6 to 12 months, and when they are used effectively, the result is often dramatic.
