The beauty and youth of the face are often associated with plump lips. Certain factors can alter the appearance of the lips : sun exposure, smoking and aging. There are a couple of aesthetic treatments able to counter the effects of these factors in order to restore naturally young lips.
Surgical and non-invasive techniques mainly work on : increasing lips volume (with filler injections or fat grafting) to plump up the lips and treating perioral wrinkles (peels, lifts and mesotherapy). Here is how fat grafting lip augmentation works. Fat grafting lip augmentation
During this procedure, the patient’s fat tissue is harvested and reinjected in the lips. This technique is also called autologous fat transfer since it is uses the patient’s own tissue. The added benefit of fat transfer compared to filler injections is the long lasting result. Grafted fat cells that have settled in the lips are permanent. It is worth reminding that natural aging tends to slim down the lips, which can’t be avoided, but can be treated this way.
About the procedure
First, the liposuction area is determined to harvest fat tissue. The surgeon starts by performing a micro-incision in this area. Areas of the body storing excess fat are often chosen for this purpose : abdominal region, inner thighs, saddle bags, etc. Only a small amount of fat is required for lip augmentation.
The harvested fat is purified in a centrifuge separating fat cells from unwanted cells and fluids. Fat is then reinjected in the lips with a micro cannula at different depths and locations to increase the contact surface between grafted cells and surrounding tissues. The survival rate of grafted fat cells is superior when fat injections are performed this way. The duration of the procedure can vary depending on the amount of fat to be injected. Typically, fat grafting lip augmentation takes half an hour to be completed.
