The ears play an important part in facial harmony, especially in facial contours. Despite that, people tend to mistreat their ears, by wearing heavy earrings contributing to torn earlobes. Earrings are the first cause of earlobe damage.
Time, pressure during sleep and sun exposure are some of the factors causing loss of elasticity in the earlobes, which makes them thinner, longer and older. There are several types of procedures designed to correct ear deformations. Less common ear surgeries involve correcting natural excessive earlobe volume. Most procedures aim at improving the appearance of the ears distorted by earrings and rejuvenate the ears.
Oculoplastic surgery is a relatively simple and quick procedure that can be performed under local anesthesia. There are several ways to perform this procedure depending on the malformation.
- Torn earlobes : This procedure focuses on reconstructing the open portion of the lobe to restore a normal appearance. The front part of the lobe has to heal completely before treating the back part.
- Overly large lobes : This procedure is adapted on a case-to-case basis. The surgeon’s goal here is to restore a natural appearance of the earlobes while minimising the scars as much as possible.
- Sagging earlobes : When it comes to restore firmness in the earlobes, simple injections are sufficient.
- Lateral earlobe proeminence : This problem typically requires changing the position of the upper lobe cartilage’s base and decreasing the volume of this cartilage.
The recovery following these procedures is short. Discomfort are minor and sutures can be removed after 2 weeks. In case of torn earlobes, wearing earrings is strongly advised against during 30 days. After this period of time, piercing the ears is still possible, but it cannot interfere with the scar from the operation in order to avoid tearing.
